Really great presentations. Loved Matt's memes, Robbie's insight into The Guardian's API battle, Eric's look at government data, and Derek's slide transitions!

Interesting talks, and very well organized.

Great range of in formation, from beginner to novice to expert. I got lost once or twice, but it wasn't much of an issue. And the case studies really helped me understand the landscape.

Really great idea - but needs to be much longer than 2 hours for much hacking to get done. Would love a 7pm-midnight type event, if there's a venue that will allow us to be there that long.

Two hours is a little short to get much hacking done, but it was a good size group and a nice chance to catch up with folks I haven't seen in a few months. Might be nice to post one or two projects that need help in advance, just so those who want to can hit the ground running when they get there.

Enjoyable collection of projects presented. Most of the presenters had significant slidedecks. Wish some of those were posted.

    Very interesting.

The information was great but I always wish there were more time to talk to people as it never seems to be a very social group.

The progam left me with a better understanding of the New Yorker and The Atavist. Given how different their models, it was good to hear them back to back.

I think these events the most successful when they work one of two ways: practical or philosophical. Practical events are about logistics, how to do things, how exactly things run. They give specific examples and break down ideas with clear information. Philosophical events are ones that talk about the bigger ideas at work. Why does one place do things a certain way, what are the guiding rules, where are things going in the future and what can we learn. I felt like this meetup kind of fell somewhere in between. The speakers clearly didn't want to give practical information (skirting questions about funding models, money, how decisions actually get made about stories) but they also didn't really get into the big questions (how will the New Yorker survive when it's actually forced to confront and use the internet and innovation). They did touch on some of both of those things, but it could have been better if it went one way or the other.

Felt privileged to be there, even on an awful, cold, windy Saturday in January, and inspired as to what can be done with FEC data. Thanks much to the journos for doing this.

Informative and interesting. It gave me some ideas for doing more with the campaign finance material we're posting.

  • Tim Henderson
It was a good combination of technical knowledge and journalism -- neither was neglected which is hard to pull off

  • Peter Aronoff
The split format (one half about the FEC and its data and the other about Ruby/Rails and how to leverage that data in web apps) made good sense, and the people speaking in both halves made the time go quickly. I would recommend it to anyone interested, but if you are not already fairly familiar with campaign funding data or Ruby/Rails, prepare to be a bit overwhelmed in one section. (Probably to be expected - neither is trivial.)

Terrific speakers, and really good questioning from the audience.

I would have liked the presenters to spend a little more time on the nitty-gritty. But otherwise, one of the more interesting meetups.

It was very informative and Nujobi.com will be taking the suggestions and implementing. The whole idea that redis and mongodb work so efficiently as well as wordpress ... the detail of the system config was enlightening to say the least. Really enjoyed the presentations

Really interesting meetup and nicely structured, i.e. simple tools first, then more complicated mapping technologies second.

  • Jonathan Hayter
I liked how the presentation was set up to demo mapping techniques ranging from simple stuff that non-programmers can use, to more complex methods for the the coding set.

Range of what was covered and the pace of the information exchange was lean and mean -- not a minute wasted.

Loved the multilayered approach to mapmaking -- less technical, more technical, etc.

This meeting was particularly good. It was an excellent showcase of the different outcomes that are possible with different levels of complexity. As always, the event organization was great.
