Meetup at Meetup. Talk by Scott Heiferman + Demos

Join us for a meetup at Meetup (very meta) with a talk and demo, followed by pizza.

Scott Heiferman, the chief executive of Meetup, will not crush an iPad with a sledgehammer for us, but he will give a talk on his vision of news and information: Why the future of social media isn't media. How journalism and media will shape the 21st century by catalyzing community like never before.

Demos will be:

  • Nowspots (nowspots.com), one of the 2010 grantees of the Knight News Challenge, which is designing ads for local businesses based on social media (e.g. Twitter accounts). Brad Flora of Chicago's Windy Citizen will be presenting.
  • Nicholas Diakopoulos will be presenting on two recent computational journalism projects at Rutgers University: Salubrious Nation (), a game-y information graphic designed to make public health data from HHS playable, and Vox Civitas, a visual analytics environment for reporters to help make sense of large-scale aggregations of social media content around events.
  • Daylife (daylife.com), an aggregation service for publishers, will be introing its Daylife API and discussing how folks are using it to hack news applications.

Plus A presentation by a team who came up with a "Speed Dating for Hacks/Hackers" event for the fall. It's not speed dating in the romantic sense (though you never know!), but more to find partners for projects.

We're charging $10, in part to cover the drinks and pizza.

If you have trouble with the cost (student?), please email us, we don't want the $10 to be a deterrent. You can volunteer to help with set up and cleanup.
