First NYC Hacks/Hackers Meetup

Hacks/Hackers is coming to New York City.

This will be the inaugural New York gathering of Hacks/Hackers, a group of journalists and technologists brought together to collaborate to build the future of media. The first event will be a social convening to talk about what you'd like to see in the future.

This group is part of a growing organization that held its first get-together in San Francisco in November and now has more than 600 members worldwide. Hacks/Hackers-affiliated events have also been held in Chicago and Washington DC.

There will be no formal presentations. But Hacks/Hackers co-founders Aron Pilhofer of The New York Times and Burt Herman will talk about the goals of the organization. Jennifer 8. Lee will discuss her work with the Knight Foundation to support journalism innovation. Josh Cohen, senior business product manager at Google News, will also make some remarks. Folks from Patch will be discussing their approach to news and technology, as well as the skills and experience they are looking for on their product and tech teams (where they are hiring).

The event will run from 7-10 p.m. There will be award-winning dim sum by Chef Joe Ng, courtesy of Patch and Micro Office.

Amazing crowd of technologists (hackers) and journalists (hacks). The first meeting was exceptional and informal -- I'm excited to see what more structured meetings will look like. I think a lot of great partnerships, ideas & maybe even some products are going to come out of this group.

Excellent first meeting. Attendance by media pros from NYT and other MSM orgs was impressive. Randy at Patch had a great team there, too. From show-of-hands, seemed to be a 50/50 split between hackers/hacks. Google "living stories" project deserves a second look from MSMs and bloggers. The open source code released in the wild needs a few good programmers. It would be terrific to see it evolve. (Also available as a WP plug-in). Great to hear about full scholarship for programmer-developers offered by Medill J-School. I think Rich Gordon mentioned 8 or 9 students have already graduated from the program and are doing interesting things. Maybe Rich can persuade some students to work on living stories. As Josh said, the BP spill/scandal would be ideal for the platform. Jenny made everyone feel welcome and offered an amazing opportunity for hacks and hackers to apply for funding through the Knight Foundation. Looking forward to hearing more about this year's winners.

Two minor complaints: seating and noise. It's bad to have to yell to hold a conversation. Otherwise, there was a great mix of entrepreneurial types, hacks, hackers and hybrids. Really interesting, friendly people, with a minimum of "gurus" and "experts."

Great combo of hacks and hackers with ideas.

    Packed room with good people.

I met a few interesting folks in my field. but I was also deluged by shameless self-promoting types and also folks who had nothing to do with journalism/new-media/design/hacking... why bother coming if u have no interest in these things?

I was hoping that there would be more purpose at this meeting, in terms of instilling a raison d'etre and building of community around this raison d'etre (beyond just eating snacks, drinking, light chatting and brief pitches). I'm willing to chalk this up to a slow start given it was the first meeting and see if there is more substance at the next meeting. But I won't continue to attend if it turns out to consistently be merely a social meetup. (These kind of events are a dime a dozen in NYC.)
